With competitive football in the Baltics officially kicking off, so do Baltic Football Power Rankings!
Lithuanian A Lyga and Estonian Premium liiga started their 2025 seasons on Friday, 28th February and completed the first game week (GW) by Sunday, 2nd of March. Meanwhile, Latvia contested it’s Super Cup, which saw RFS face off against Riga FC and win 3-1. Latvian regular season begins on the 5th of March.
GW1 was not expected to bring significant changes to the Rankings, even taking into account the inevitable period of ‘real world’ calibration. Most teams moved one place up or down, whereas others stayed where they were, albeit with a change in the coefficient.
FC RFS, on the back of their win over Riga FC, for example, gained 10 coefficient points while Riga FC lost the same amount. While this did not affect the positioning of Top 2 leaders in the Baltics, it did bring Lithuanian Champions FK Žalgiris, who won both the Lithuanian Super Cup and their first league fixture, within mere 32 points of the wealthiest club in the Baltics.
Paide, Kauno Žalgiris and Tammeka have each climbed a spot on the back of expected wins in their domestic Championships, but Hegelmann‘s 2-0 defeat to a lower-ranked Banga side cost them 15 coefficient points which dropped last season’s A Lyga runner-up’s a whopping 3 places down to 15! With only a point advantage over the Latvian FK Metta, Hegelmann will need to get a result against FK Panevėžys in GW2 to avoid falling into the second half of the Power Rankings table. Metta, on the other hand, will face favourites Liepāja in the opening match of Latvian Virslīga and, in the event of a win, could catapult themselves as high as 12th.
GW2 in the Baltics will conclude on the 9th of March, at which point we will check back on how the teams in the region stack up against one another! Expect more movement from the Latvian clubs, which will finally begin their season!
