About the club
“Sūduva” Marijampolė is one of the most successful clubs in Lithuanian football history, having won the A Lyga three times, the Lithuanian Cup three times, and the Lithuanian Super Cup four times. The club has also attracted international attention, with world-renowned players like Japanese superstar Keisuke Honda, who previously played for AC Milan.
Founded in 1942, “Sūduva” played its first friendly match against the well-known Kybartai “Sveikatos” team and began competing in the Suvalkija district championships. The club’s home, the Marijampolė Football Arena, opened in 2008 with a capacity of 6,523 seats, making it one of Lithuania’s most developed football venues.
The club’s modern history began to take shape in 2002 when “Sūduva” returned to the A Lyga, finishing 6th. While their domestic performance was modest, they made an unforgettable impression in the UEFA Cup, defeating Brann Bergen 3-2 on both legs before falling to Celtic in the next round. In 2005, “Sūduva” achieved its first major success, claiming bronze in the A Lyga and winning the Lithuanian Cup. The team’s European journey continued with a notable run in the UEFA Cup, though they were eliminated by Club Brugge in the second qualifying round.
The club entered its golden era between 2017 and 2019. In 2017, under coach Vladimir Čeburin, “Sūduva” won their first-ever A Lyga title, finishing with 71 points, four ahead of “Žalgiris.” This was followed by a historic run in the Europa League, reaching the third qualifying round. “Sūduva” continued their dominance in 2018, winning back-to-back titles and securing the Lithuanian Super Cup. They also made headlines by eliminating APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League qualifiers before falling to Crvena zvezda. In 2019, the club won all three major Lithuanian titles—the A Lyga, the Super Cup, and the LFF Cup—while amassing a record 87 points in the league. Their European campaign included a dramatic win over Maccabi Tel Aviv, though they were eliminated by Ferencvaros Budapest in the Europa League play-offs.
However, 2020 saw a decline as “Sūduva” finished second in the league and lost in both the Super Cup and LFF Cup finals. In March 2023, the club underwent a major renewal, with a focus on local and young talent and the appointment of Marijampolė native Dovydas Lastauskas as head coach. The team finished 6th in the league and was eliminated in the LFF Cup quarter-finals on penalties.
The 2024 season has been challenging for “Sūduva,” with several issues affecting the first team. Even though the team conceded the second fewest goals in the league, they also scored the least (33 goals the same as two other teams). The team finished 9th out of 10 teams in the league, and only just survived the relegation playoff.
