Estonia goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein was left out of Werder Bremen’s squad for Saturday’s friendly against Auxerre because of a muscle problem.
Werder confirmed the issue in a message on social media, saying: “Karl is out with muscle problems.” The match, which kicked off at 15:30 Estonian time, comes against an Auxerre side who finished 15th in France’s top flight last season.
With Hein unavailable, Werder started Austria international Alexander Schlager in goal, with the 30-year-old the Estonian’s main internal rival for minutes.
Werder’s competitive season begins in the Bundesliga on 30th August, when they host Freiburg, before turning their attention to the German Cup, where they face Lüneburg Hansa in the first round on the following Saturday.
