Vilnius Žalgiris keep title hopes alive after emphatic win against Sūduva
Vilnius Žalgiris strengthened their position in the Lithuanian Toplyga title race with an emphatic 4-0 home victory over direct rivals Sūduva Marijampolė, as Bryan Teixeira scored twice in the second half to help the hosts move within four points of league leaders Kauno Žalgiris.
The Lithuanian top flight returned from the international break with just one league fixture scheduled for the weekend, a rescheduled Matchday 22 encounter originally due to take place in mid-July but postponed because of European club competitions.
Both teams entered the match firmly in contention for the league title. Sūduva, who had led the standings for a considerable period, surrendered top spot before the international break and arrived in Vilnius one point behind Kauno Žalgiris. The hosts, meanwhile, were seven points adrift of the leaders and knew that victory was essential to keeping their championship ambitions alive.
Sūduva head coach Donatas Vencevičius was forced into a notable change in goal, with first-choice goalkeeper Ignas Plūkas absent from the matchday squad for the first time this season. Giedrius Zenkevičius was handed his first league appearance of the campaign, but the visitors defensive problems became apparent almost immediately.
Žalgiris applied pressure from the opening minutes and needed just six minutes to break the deadlock. After intercepting a pass outside the penalty area, Stanislav Bilenkyi combined neatly with Matas Vareika, who found himself unmarked inside the box and calmly finished past Zenkevičius to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Things quickly went from bad to worse for Sūduva as Žalgiris doubled their advantage just a few minutes later. Following a passing move down the left flank, Dominik Franke delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal, where Aleksandar Živanovic inadvertently turned it into his own net to make it 2-0.
After a disastrous opening spell, Sūduva gradually managed to slow the hosts attacking momentum and began creating opportunities of their own. Ibrahima Seck found himself through on goal following a long pass, but Žalgiris goalkeeper Vincentas Šarkauskas rushed off his line to narrow the angle, forcing the forward to lift his effort over the crossbar.
The visitors had another promising opportunity towards the end of the first half when Yegor Tsykalo was left completely unmarked at the far post following a corner. However, his free header went straight into the goalkeeper’s hands, wasting an excellent chance to reduce the deficit.
Sūduva’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered another major blow in the closing stages of the first half. Žalgiris had won a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area when Vareika went to ground following an altercation with visiting defender Rati Grigalava.
The referee was called to the pitchside monitor for a VAR review, which showed Grigalava putting his hands around Vareika’s neck and pushing him. The Georgian defender was subsequently shown a straight red card, leaving Sūduva with ten men and a two-goal deficit before the interval.
The resulting free-kick almost brought a third goal for the hosts. Yury Kendysh struck his effort into the defensive wall, but the rebound fell to Bilenkyi, whose powerful shot rattled the woodwork. The danger was not over, as the ball then reached Franke, but his header went wide.
Playing with a numerical advantage, Žalgiris continued to control proceedings after the restart, although Sūduva showed occasional signs of attacking intent. The visitors attempted to threaten from distance, with Franklin Tangiri producing a powerful effort that took a deflection and forced Šarkauskas into a good save. Faustas Steponavičius also tried his luck from outside the penalty area, but his attempt was blocked.
Those moments served as a reminder that the contest was not entirely over, but Sūduva’s attempts to push forward increasingly left spaces in their defensive structure, which Žalgiris exploited ruthlessly during the final 20 minutes.
The hosts extended their advantage in the 71st minute following a rapid counterattack that began deep inside their own half. Within just a couple of passes, the ball reached Nemanja Mihajlovic in the attacking half, and he played it into the path of Bryan Teixeira. The winger beat his defender inside the penalty area before producing an excellent left-footed finish into the far corner to make it 3-0.
Ten minutes later, Teixeira struck again as Sūduva were caught out by another counterattack. The winger found himself in a dangerous shooting position and this time finished at the near post, completing his brace and extending the home side’s advantage to four goals.
Žalgiris appeared to have added a fifth goal late in the contest when Koy Lupano knocked the ball down for Serbian striker Nikola Petković, who finished into the net. However, a VAR review identified a handball in the build-up, and the goal was disallowed.
The match ended without any stoppage time being added, confirming a commanding 4-0 victory for Vilnius Žalgiris in one of their most important fixtures of the season.
The result lifts the Vilnius club into third place in the Toplyga standings, just three points behind Sūduva and four behind leaders Kauno Žalgiris, significantly tightening the championship race heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
Žalgiris will look to maintain their momentum next Sunday when they host Hegelmann, while Sūduva face another crucial test the following Monday when they meet league leaders Kauno Žalgiris in their final head-to-head encounter of the season.
