Riga FC moved back to the top of the Virsliga table with a 1-0 victory away to Jelgava on Saturday. Iago Siqueira scored the only goal of the match in the 29th minute, finishing into the far corner after a pass from Raki Aouani.
Jelgava had opportunities to equalise after the interval. Orlando Galo shot over the crossbar before Martin Hasek was given space to shoot from a promising position, but his effort was also off target.
Riga controlled much of the second half and continued to search for a second goal. Jelgava’s task became more difficult in the 79th minute when Jegors Novikovs was sent off after a VAR review for bringing down an opposing forward while attempting to clear the ball.
Jelgava defended with 10 men for the closing stages and prevented Riga from extending their lead. The result leaves Riga and RFS level on 73 points, although Riga have played two more matches. RFS can regain sole possession of first place when they face Latvian Cup holders Auda on Sunday.
