Morozs says RFS must overcome resource gap to reclaim Latvian title

RFS are one step away from regaining the Virsliga title, with victory over Grobiņa in the penultimate round or a draw away to Riga FC on the final day enough to secure the championship. Viktors Morozs’ side have won four consecutive matches, three of them against lower-budget clubs after half-time.

Asked whether he was satisfied with the team’s late-season form and progress since last year, Morozs pointed to the close competition. “Would you like us to win every match 5-0?” he said, noting that Riga’s recent results had also included narrow wins. He added that both clubs had dropped points in previous autumn run-ins.

Morozs, in his seventh season in charge of RFS, has won three league titles and could claim a fourth. He said last season had prompted him to take responsibility and change the team’s approach. “Last year we played free-flowing football, with many quick attacks, but no results,” he said.

The coach described the difference in resources between the title rivals. “People say Riga FC and RFS are in the same league, but Riga are like PSG and Bayern Munich in their leagues. They have to win four times in five seasons. We are more in the league of Auda and Liepāja,” he said.

Morozs said RFS had identified what needed to improve, including the squad, structure, defending and attacking. He stressed the importance of winning difficult matches when performances are not going well, and said he was never fully satisfied with the team’s play. “We always want to develop,” he said, adding that further discussion could wait until the season was over.
