Nõmme United centre-back Ricky Chanda made his senior international debut for Zambia in a 3-1 defeat by Algeria in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on Friday. The 21-year-old started on the right of a central-defensive pairing and played the full match.
Algeria, who reached the last 32 at this summer’s World Cup before losing to Switzerland, started Mohamed Belloumi, Amine Gouiri and Mohamed Amoura in attack. Zambia are 90th in the FIFA rankings, while Algeria are ranked higher.
Zambian football outlet BolaNews rated Chanda 4 out of 10, saying the debut was difficult and he struggled to contain Algeria’s attackers. Zambia will look to respond on Tuesday when they host Togo, who beat Burundi in their opening qualifier.
Chanda moved to Estonia from Lithuanian side FK Riteriai in February last year and has made 63 appearances for Nõmme United since, scoring 10 goals.
