Goalkeeper error allows Nõmme United escape relegation zone
Photo: Nomme United/Facebook Nõmme United climbed out of the Estonian Premium Liiga relegation zone with a crucial 1-0 away victory over bottom-placed Narva Trans in Matchday 34. Egert Õunapuu capitalised on a costly goalkeeping mistake in the first half, while United goalkeeper Gregor Pürg saved a second-half penalty to preserve the visitors’ narrow advantage.
With Narva Trans already relegated, the stakes were considerably higher for Nõmme United, who entered Tuesday’s encounter fighting to avoid the relegation play-off position.
Victory would allow the visitors to move above both Kuressaare and Pärnu Vaprus ahead of Wednesday’s meeting between those two sides, making the trip to Narva particularly important.
United welcomed Ricky Chanda back into their starting lineup following his recent medical emergency, while Õunapuu also returned to the starting eleven. Narva, meanwhile, made several changes, including Daniil Pareiko replacing Iker Venteo in goal and Yereney Betancor starting in place of the suspended Wisdom Awusi.
The visitors made an encouraging start, controlling possession and creating several opportunities during the opening stages. Zakaria Beglarishvili came close to breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute, unleashing a powerful effort from approximately 12 metres that struck the crossbar. The resulting corner also caused problems for the Narva defence, although Andre Frolov’s attempt was blocked.
United continued to threaten, with Õunapuu finding space inside the penalty area after a pass from Torres, but his effort from a tight angle was comfortably collected by Pareiko.
Moments later, Beglarishvili struck the woodwork for a second time, once again from around 12 metres, as the visitors continued to dominate the early exchanges.
Narva gradually began to create opportunities of their own. Betancor forced Pürg into his first significant save following a corner, while Berardozzi also tested the United goalkeeper from a tight angle.
United should have taken the lead when Õunapuu found himself with a clear opportunity from approximately eight metres, but the forward failed to direct his effort on target.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 39th minute following a remarkable mistake by the Narva goalkeeper. Pareiko attempted to clear the ball from his penalty area, but Õunapuu anticipated the clearance and managed to block it. The United forward then reacted quickest, chasing down the loose ball near the byline before turning it into the unguarded net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Despite creating several opportunities, United entered the interval with only a narrow advantage, having registered nine attempts during the opening half compared to Narva’s four.
The second half began at a slower tempo, with United attempting to control possession and protect their lead. However, their increasingly cautious approach allowed Narva to grow into the contest.
The hosts began to apply more pressure, with Gero producing a dangerous effort from inside the penalty area that forced Pürg into an important save. Narva made four substitutions in the 64th minute, introducing Kaua Miranda, Baljabkin, German Šlein and Škinjov as they searched for an equaliser.
Their best opportunity arrived shortly afterwards when United substitute Karl Läänelaid brought down Betancor inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Betancor stepped up to take the spot kick himself, but Pürg guessed correctly and produced an excellent diving save to preserve United’s advantage.
The missed penalty proved a major setback for Narva, although the hosts continued to push forward. Betancor later tried his luck from distance, but Pürg was again equal to the effort.
Narva had another opportunity in the 80th minute when Kaua Miranda connected with a corner from approximately four metres out, but the substitute failed to direct his header between the posts.
The closing stages became increasingly tense as United attempted to protect their narrow lead. Narva’s hopes of finding an equaliser suffered another blow when Kondrattsev received a second yellow card for bringing down substitute Kevin Mätas, leaving the hosts with ten men.
United nearly added a second goal from the resulting free kick, but Frolov sent his effort narrowly wide. The visitors successfully negotiated three minutes of stoppage time to secure a vital 1-0 victory.
The result lifts Nõmme United above both Kuressaare and Pärnu Vaprus, temporarily moving them out of the relegation play-off position ahead of Wednesday’s meeting between their two direct rivals.
