The result moves Kalju within four points of third-placed Flora, keeping their hopes of securing European qualification through a top-three finish alive.
Both teams entered the encounter at Hiiu Stadium struggling for consistency, with Flora particularly desperate to recover from their disappointing 1-3 defeat against Harju JK Laagri. Kalju, meanwhile, made four changes to their starting lineup, including a return for goalkeeper Henri Perk, who replaced Maksim Pavlov after the latter had started the previous five matches. With Rommi Siht and Nikita Ivanov suspended, 19-year-old Fjodor Jekimov was handed his first Premium Liiga start.
Flora welcomed Sander Tovstik and Sergei Zenjov back into their starting eleven, but their afternoon quickly turned into another nightmare. Just three minutes after kick-off, Männilaan capitalised on a loose ball near the edge of the penalty area, drove forward and calmly placed his shot into the bottom corner to give Kalju an early lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors almost immediately. In the sixth minute, Flora defender Kolobov brought down Orlov inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a penalty. The decision was confirmed by VAR, and Männilaan stepped up to convert from the spot, doubling Kalju’s advantage.
Männilaan nearly completed a sensational hat-trick in the eighth minute, producing an acrobatic overhead kick that forced Flora goalkeeper Evert Grünvald into an excellent save beneath the crossbar.
Despite their dreadful start, Flora gradually recovered and pulled a goal back in the 13th minute. Sander Alamaa delivered an excellent cross from the left flank, and the experienced Zenjov arrived inside the six-yard box to direct the ball between Perk and the near post, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
The goal gave Flora renewed confidence, although Kalju continued to look dangerous whenever they ventured forward. Alamaa twice threatened to equalise before the interval, first beating Jekimov and sending an effort narrowly wide from a tight angle, then failing to make clean contact with another opportunity inside the penalty area.
The hosts finished the opening half on the front foot but were unable to restore their two-goal advantage. Kalju entered the interval leading 2-1, having registered five shots on target compared to Flora’s one.
Flora emerged for the second half with greater urgency, introducing Kalimullin in place of Valdmets at the break. The substitute quickly became involved, seeing a long-range effort blocked before Perk collected the loose ball.
The visitors continued to push forward, with Antonov testing Perk from distance, but Kalju remained dangerous on the counterattack. Männilaan came close to completing his hat-trick once again shortly before the hour mark, finding space inside the penalty area and directing a close-range effort towards the near post. However, Grünvald produced another important save to keep Flora within touching distance.
Flora responded by introducing Rauno Alliku and Danil Kuraksin, with the latter immediately adding energy to their attacking play. Kuraksin delivered a dangerous cross for Zenjov, whose header missed the target, before wasting a promising opportunity of his own with a powerful effort that sailed well over the crossbar.
As the second half progressed, Flora enjoyed longer spells of possession, forcing Kalju to defend deeper. However, the visitors struggled to turn their territorial advantage into clear-cut opportunities. Flora’s task became even more difficult when substitute Alliku suffered a head injury following a collision involving Zenjov and Perk inside the penalty area. Having only entered the match during the second half, Alliku was forced off and replaced by Usta.
The visitors continued searching for an equaliser during five minutes of stoppage time. Kalimullin saw an effort blocked following a corner, while Antonov found himself completely unmarked for a header but directed the ball straight at Perk.
Kalju held firm to secure an important 2-1 victory, ending their three-match winless streak and dealing another blow to Flora’s disappointing campaign.
The result leaves Kalju just four points behind third-placed Flora, with the latter having played one match more. With third place guaranteeing European qualification, Kalju remain firmly in contention for a place on the podium.
