The upset trend continued today in the TonyBet Virslīga as BFC Daugavpils, after beating Riga FC for the first time away from home last week, secured a historic 2:1 victory against FK Auda, marking their first win over them in the Latvian top flight.
Both teams entered the match in high spirits, with BFC Daugavpils coming in from an away win against Riga FC, while FK Auda was riding a two-game winning streak. Daugavpils manager Kiril Kurbatov fielded the same starting eleven as in the previous match, while FK Auda’s coach, Jurģis Kalns, made several adjustments. Roberts Ozols returned as goalkeeper after a two-game absence, and Jegors Novikovs made his first start of the season, replacing the injured Tin Hrvoj. Ibrahim Kone and Enzo Monteiro also returned to Auda’s starting lineup.
The first goal of the match came late in the first half, when Wasiri Williams headed the ball past Roberts Ozols, following a great cross by Ņikita Barkovskis, making it 1:0. Although FK Auda received more yellow cards than they created scoring opportunities, they made a double substitution at halftime in hopes of turning the game around. However, it was BFC Daugavpils that doubled their lead early in the second half.
Boubou Diallo showcased excellent play, finding Gļebs Mihaļcovs alone in the box. Mihaļcovs passed to Barthelemy Diedhiou, who took a close-range shot that was saved by Ozols. Diedhiou was quick to react to the rebound and headed it into the goal, marking his third goal of the season. He has also contributed two assists so far.
There was no turning back as Auda launched an attack, managing to convert when, for the second game in a row, the Emīls Birka connection with Deniss Meļņiks proved decisive. The latter one scored a header to make it 1:2 with 20 minutes remaining.
Despite their momentum suggesting they should dominate the remaining minutes, Auda struggled on the front, while BFC Daugavpils created five clear chances to score a third goal and secure the win, but the Latvian national team goalkeeper Roberts Ozols performed brilliantly, preventing Auda from losing by more than one goal.
This victory marked BFC Daugavpils’ first win against FK Auda in the Latvian top-flight. It ended a streak of 12 winless league matches against them since Auda’s promotion to the Virslīga in 2022, during which Daugavpils had a record of 0 wins, 1 draw, and 11 losses.
With this win, BFC Daugavpils climbed to second place in the league table, while FK Auda dropped to sixth. Daugavpils will look to extend their winning streak on Thursday when they play an away game against FS Jelgava, while FK Auda will host FK Liepāja the day before.
