Tukums came from behind to beat fellow bottom-half side Ogre United 2-1 in the opening match of Virslīga Matchday 29, scoring twice in the final eight minutes to claim three hugely important points in the relegation battle.
Ogre United were the more dangerous side for much of the first half and gradually took control of the game. Ingars Pūlis, who scored 18 league goals for Tukums last season but is still searching for his first of the current campaign, twice threatened against his former club. His 29th-minute header was saved by Sergejs Vilkovs, before the goalkeeper denied him again shortly afterwards.
The visitors were eventually rewarded in the 34th minute. Markuss Kalniņš received the ball on the left, worked his way past two opponents and finished into the bottom corner to give Ogre a deserved 1-0 lead.
Tukums responded after the break by taking greater control of possession, while Ogre increasingly looked to protect their advantage and threaten on the counterattack. The hosts began to create more chances, with Leoni Gastaldelo and Jun Toba both testing goalkeeper Nikita Parfjonovs, while Ogre still carried a threat through Markuss Kalniņš and Artem Marchuk.
The tension increased in the closing stages, with several yellow cards shown as the match became more physical. Tukums continued to push forward and finally found the equaliser in the 82nd minute. Kristaps Kļaviņš delivered from the left and Bogdans Samoilovs rose in the middle to guide a header into the top corner for 1-1.
Ogre attempted to respond, but instead Tukums completed the turnaround in the 89th minute. Kaspars Anmanis supplied the ball into the box and Ruslans Deružinskis finished from close range to make it 2-1, securing a dramatic late victory for the hosts.
The result is a major setback for Ogre United, who had the opportunity to reduce their gap to Tukums to just three points but instead now sit nine points behind them. Tukums, meanwhile, move to within one point of Grobiņa and significantly strengthen their hopes of avoiding the relegation play-off.
Tukums next league match is on Thursday when they will play away against Super Nova, while Ogre United on Friday will host FK Liepāja.
