Gļebs Žaleiko named Virslīga’s best young player of third round

FS Jelgava midfielder Gļebs Žaleiko has been named the Sportland Tonybet Virslīga’s best young player for the third round of fixtures.

The 22-year-old featured in all nine of Jelgava’s matches during the period, starting eight of them and contributing two goals and two assists as the club recorded four wins and five defeats.

It has also been Žaleiko’s most productive Virslīga season to date. He has registered two goals and six assists for Jelgava in 2026, having previously represented FC RFS and BFC Daugavpils. The midfielder made his top-flight debut at 17 and has now accumulated 94 Virslīga appearances.

Žaleiko was selected ahead of Jelgava teammate Alans Kangars and Super Nova trio Ivans Patrikejevs, Dāvis Viljams Veisbuks and Valerijs Lizunovs.

Candidates for the award are nominated by the Latvian Football Federation’s Coaches Council, with representatives of the sports media and Virslīga head coaches also taking part in the vote.

Patrikejevs won the award for the opening round of the season, while Lizunovs was selected for the second.
