Tonybet Virslīga Matchday 16 ended with FS Jelgava and BFC Daugavpils playing out a 1-1 draw, as the Latgale club once again failed to record an away victory against a Jelgava side in their Virslīga history.
The match had plenty of chances at both ends, but both teams had to settle for a point after second-half goals from Filip Hasek and Rostand Ndjiki.
Jelgava started brightly and nearly went ahead inside the opening minutes when Rihards Bečers headed narrowly wide after a cross from Gļebs Žaleiko. Daugavpils responded quickly through William Mukwelle, whose long-range attempt forced Adam Dvorak into an early save.
The first half remained open, with both sides finding moments in attack. Jelgava created several dangerous situations through Bečers, Tomas Rataj and Filip Hašek, while Daugavpils threatened through Artem Garzha, Rostand Ndjiki and Joel Yakubu on transitions.
One of Jelgava’s best chances came late in the first half when Rataj met a Žaleiko cross from close range, but his shot from very close range went over the bar. At the other end, Yakubu almost punished Jelgava on a fast break in stoppage time, sending his effort just wide of the top corner.
After a goalless first half, Jelgava finally found the breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Roberts Melķis launched a fast attack and found Filip Hašek on the left side of the penalty area, with the Czech midfielder finishing calmly to make it 1-0. The lead, however, lasted only 11 minutes.
Daugavpils increased the pressure and equalised in the 74th minute after Abdoul Traore’s shot was initially saved by Dvorak. The loose ball fell kindly to Rostand Ndjiki, who reacted quickest from close range and turned it into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
The visitors pushed for a late winner and created several dangerous moments from set pieces. Papa Gningue headed wide, Ndjiki missed from close range after a corner, and Ceti Tchibinda had a header blocked as Daugavpils finished the match strongly.
Jelgava also had chances to steal the victory late on, with Hašek forcing Jānis Beks into a save before later firing over from a good position after a cross from Žaleiko.
In the end, neither side could find the decisive goal. For Daugavpils, the draw means their long wait for a first away win against a Jelgava club in Virslīga continues.
