According to information obtained by Baltic Football News, Estonian specialist Vladimir Vassiljev is very close to becoming the new FK Liepāja head coach following the departure of Andreas Alm. The 38-year-old coach has already spent the last few days in the Baltic Sea coastal city.
Vassiljev’s most recent managerial role came at Estonian Premium Liiga club Paide Linnameeskond, where he worked for a year before being surprisingly dismissed at the end of April this year. Prior to that, the Estonian coach enjoyed success with FCI Levadia, guiding the Tallinn club to the Estonian championship title in 2021 and the Estonian Cup trophy in 2022.
During his coaching career, Vassiljev has also managed Nõmme United, worked abroad with Slovak club STK Šamorin and served as an assistant coach for the Estonian national team under Karel Voolaid.
Earlier today FK Liepāja officially announced the departure of Swedish coach Andreas Alm, who led the club to a third-place finish in the Virslīga last season. However, the 2026 campaign has been far more difficult for the club, with Liepāja currently sitting fifth in the table and already falling significantly behind the leading trio of Riga FC, RFS and FK Auda in the title race.
According to the information available to Baltic Football News, Vassiljev had already attended Liepāja’s recent away match against FS Jelgava.
FK Liepāja’s next match comes tomorrow, when they host FK Tukums 2000 at home.
