Tonybet Virslīga title holders Riga FC came from two goals down to salvage a dramatic 2-2 draw against FS Jelgava at Skonto Stadium, denying the visitors what would have been one of the biggest results of their season.

The visitors stunned the home crowd with a fearless start and quickly punished Riga’s sluggish opening minutes. After an early warning shot from Salah-Eddine Oulad flew over the bar, Jelgava began finding dangerous moments from set pieces and direct attacks.

Their breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute. Following a corner kick, Glebs Zaļeiko delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area where Czech forward Tomaš Rataj rose highest and guided a header into the bottom corner to give Jelgava a surprising 1-0 advantage.

Just three minutes later another Czech player doubled the lead in spectacular fashion. Leoš Prior stepped up to take a corner in the 14th minute and curled the ball directly into the net, catching both the Riga defence and goalkeeper Krišjānis Zviedris completely off guard for a stunning 2-0 scoreline.

Jelgava nearly added a third shortly afterwards after an adventurous moment from Zviedris outside his goal almost gifted the visitors another chance, but this time fortune stayed on Riga’s side.

The champions gradually recovered from the disastrous opening and began increasing the pressure as the first half progressed. Orlando Galo went close with a header, while Muhammed Badamosi missed a big opportunity from close range shortly before halftime. Even then Jelgava still looked dangerous on the counterattack, with Filip Hašek twice firing narrowly over the crossbar.

Riga head coach reacted immediately after the break, introducing Caio Ferreira and Paulo Eduardo, and the changes quickly shifted the momentum entirely toward the hosts.

The pressure finally paid off in the 67th minute. After a quick attacking move through the middle, Antonijs Černomordijs found Caio inside the area and the Brazilian forward powered his finish past Adam Dvorak to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

From that moment Riga completely took control territorially, though Jelgava continued defending bravely and still threatened occasionally through long-range efforts and set pieces. Dvorak produced several important saves, including denying Galo from close range as the pressure continued building.

Eventually the resistance broke three minutes from time. Following a set-piece delivery into the box, Černomordijs reacted quickest to keep the ball alive and laid it into the middle where Orlando Galo finished calmly into the bottom corner to complete Riga’s comeback and rescue a point for the defending champions.

With this draw Riga FC dropped valuable points, giving their main rivals RFS the opportunity to open a four-point lead at the top of the table if they defeat FK Auda in tomorrow’s crucial clash between the league’s top sides.
