FK Liepāja bounced back strongly from their humiliating 0-5 defeat against RFS in the previous round, comfortably defeating Ogre United 4-1 at home in the 12th round of the Tonybet Virslīga.

Unlike the first meeting between the sides earlier this season, where Liepāja needed a last-second winner, the home side wasted no time this time around. Already in the fifth minute, after a corner delivery was flicked on by Iļja Korotkovs, Vladislavs Sorokins was left unmarked at the far post to head Liepāja into an early lead.

The hosts nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Dutch defender Bart Straalman rose highest inside the box, but his close-range header flew just over the crossbar. Liepāja continued to dominate throughout the opening half, creating several dangerous moments and winning a series of corners, while goalkeeper Danijel Petkovič was left largely untroubled.

Shortly before the hour mark Liepāja earned a penalty after Rūdolfs Ziemelis brought down Amadou Traore inside the box. Djibril Gueye stepped up confidently and blasted the penalty into the top corner to make it 2-0, scoring for the second consecutive league match against Ogre after also finding the net in the dramatic victory over them earlier in the season.

Ogre United quickly found a route back into the game after VAR awarded the visitors a penalty of their own. Kristers Čudars calmly converted from the spot, continuing his strong recent form with his fourth goal in the last three league rounds.

Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived. In the 79th minute Chovanie Amatkarijo effectively sealed the victory after a quick attacking combination, firing a precise finish into the far bottom corner following an assist from Sorokins.

Deep into stoppage time substitute Kyvon Leidsman added a fourth, using his physicality to overpower Ziemelis inside the area before turning sharply and finishing high into the net to complete the emphatic 4-1 result.

The victory gives Liepāja an important response after last week’s collapse, while Ogre United continue to struggle defensively in their debut Virslīga campaign. Ogre will next face SK Super Nova, while Liepāja host BFC Daugavpils next weekend.

FK Liepāja vs Ogre United – 4-1 (1-0)
Goals: Sorokins 5′, Gueye 60′ (Penalty kick), Amatkarijo 80′, Leidsman 90+2′ | Čudars 65′ (Penalty kick)
