The first goalless draw of the 2026 Tonybet Virslīga season was recorded on Monday evening in Liepāja, where FK Grobiņa and FS Jelgava shared the points after a tense but low-scoring 0-0 encounter.
Despite the lack of goals, both teams created several decent opportunities in a physical match filled with fouls, blocked shots and strong defensive work.
Jelgava looked slightly more dangerous during the opening half-hour. Roberts Meļķis and Rihards Bečers both tested the Grobiņa defence, while Gļebs Žaleiko forced a solid save from goalkeeper Vjačeslavs Kudrjavcevs in the 33rd minute after being found inside the box by Gļebs Patika.
The visitors also threatened on the counterattack, but finishing once again proved to be an issue. Meļķis fired wide after a quick breakaway late in the first half, while Bečers missed from distance earlier in the match.
Grobiņa gradually improved after halftime and began to create more pressure of their own. Maksims Sidorovs was active throughout the second half, twice going close from outside the box, while Artem Kholod missed a promising chance from the right side of the penalty area shortly after the hour mark.
Jelgava nearly found the breakthrough in the 80th minute during a chaotic sequence inside the box. Patika’s header was blocked, Žaleiko’s rebound effort was also stopped, before Alans Kangars’ header was eventually saved by Kudrjavcevs.
At the other end, Grobiņa pushed hard in the closing stages and almost stole the win in the 89th minute when substitute Devids Dobrecovs unleashed a powerful long-range strike, but Jelgava goalkeeper Adam Dvorak reacted well to push the effort away.
Neither side could find a late winner, as the match ended scoreless – the first 0-0 result in this season’s Virslīga campaign.
Following the draw, Jelgava moved up to seventh place with 12 points, while Grobiņa remain ninth with 11 points, level on points with FK Tukums 2000.
