In a match where chances were scarce and momentum heavily favored the hosts, SK Super Nova struck at the perfect moment, as a dramatic late goal secured a 1-0 away victory over BFC Daugavpils in the ninth round of the Tonybet Virslīga.

The two sides entered the clash in contrasting form. Daugavpils were unbeaten in five matches and growing in confidence, while Super Nova arrived under pressure, having lost three consecutive games. That contrast was evident early on, with the home side dictating much of the play despite struggling to convert possession into clear-cut chances.

The first real opportunity came in the 30th minute, when Joel Yakubu unleashed a powerful strike from a tight angle, only to be denied by a sharp save from Dāvis Viljams Veisbuks. Yakubu proved to be the driving force behind Daugavpils’ attacking efforts throughout the first half, constantly finding space and creating danger, yet the breakthrough remained elusive as both teams went into the break goalless.

The pattern continued after halftime. Yakubu again thought he had made the difference, finding the net at one point, but the assistant referee correctly ruled the goal out for offside. Daugavpils kept pushing, with their attacking play growing increasingly fluid, though they repeatedly ran into either defensive resistance or their own lack of precision in front of goal.

One of their best chances arrived in the 61st minute when Yakubu carved open the defense with a pass into the box. A deflection saw the ball fall kindly for Oulej-Haj, but his effort was once again denied by Veisbuks, who stood firm under pressure. The hosts continued to press, with Rostand Ndjiki forcing space for a left-footed attempt that drifted just wide, while Mamadou Sylla later missed a golden opportunity with a header from close range.

Despite dominating large stretches of the match, Daugavpils failed to capitalize – and paid the ultimate price in the closing moments.

In the 90th minute, Super Nova were awarded a free kick from distance. Facundo Garcia stepped up and delivered a stunning strike that crashed against the post, only for the rebound to ricochet off goalkeeper Jānis Beks and into the net. A touch of fortune, perhaps – but a decisive one.

It was a cruel ending for Daugavpils, who had done much of the attacking but left themselves exposed to a late sucker punch.

With the win, Super Nova climb to fourth place, level on 13 points with Daugavpils, who now drop to fifth. In a tightly contested table.

Next up, Daugavpils will look to bounce back with a demanding trip to face FK Grobiņa, while Super Nova return home with renewed confidence ahead of their clash against FK Auda.
