FK Žalgiris Vilnius have made a major signing, securing the services of Lithuanian international right-back and FC Hegelmann captain Klaudijus Upstas.

The 31-year-old defender spent the past six seasons at FC Hegelmann, where he also served as team captain. Just days after Hegelmann announced that their club icon would be leaving, Upstas’ next destination has now been revealed: the Lithuanian bronze medalists FK Žalgiris Vilnius.

In his final season at Hegelmann, Upstas featured in 39 matches, scoring once and providing five assists. Despite his efforts, the club fell short of trophies, finishing second in both the A Lyga and the Lithuanian Cup.

FK Žalgiris sporting director Giedrius Klevinskas praised the new signing:
“I have known Klaudijus and worked with him for many years, so I know the value he brings both on and off the pitch. His consistent performances speak for themselves, and his leadership and character make him a player you can trust. We are delighted to welcome Klaudijus to Vilnius Žalgiris – a national team player who can inspire those around him and help the club achieve its goals.”

Upstas himself expressed excitement about joining the club and the support of the fans:
“First, I want to thank the club for the opportunity to join. I fully understand the expectations and demands that come with wearing this jersey. I also want to address the Žalgiris fans and the entire community – your support creates an atmosphere known throughout Lithuania. It is a force that inspires the team and everyone around it. Our path is clear: we are aiming for the top, and we will do it together. From day one, I can promise one thing: my dedication will be absolute. I am now a part of your team.”

Upstas has played a total of 266 A Lyga games, scoring 15 goals, and has represented clubs including Tauras Taurage, FK Palanga, FK Atlantas, Banga Gargždai, Jonava, and Stumbras. He has also earned 12 caps for the Lithuanian national team.

Yesterday, under the club’s new management, Žalgiris announced the signing of Deividas Šešplaukis from FA Šiauliai, making Upstas the club’s second confirmed addition of the offseason.
