Kauno Žalgiris produced a dominant performance in Matchday 30 of the Toplyga, sweeping aside Telšiai Džiugas 5-0 at home to continue their push in the title race and put pressure on league leaders Sūduva
The hosts took control early and opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Leo Ribeiro created the goal with a clever piece of play before delivering a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, where Gratas Sirgėdas headed past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
Kauno Žalgiris remained on top throughout the first half, creating the more dangerous attacks while largely keeping Džiugas away from their own goal. The visitors did threaten from a set piece, but the home defence dealt with the danger.
The second goal arrived in the 36th minute and came in similar fashion to the opener. Leon Krekovic crossed from the right and Anthony Kalik met the delivery with an accurate header to double the advantage before the break. Later the goal was counted to Džiugas defender Ibrahim Cisse as own goal.
Any hopes of a Džiugas comeback quickly disappeared after half-time. Substitute Motiejus Burba needed only a few minutes to make an impact, scoring in the 48th minute to put Kauno Žalgiris 3-0 ahead.
The fourth followed in the 56th minute. Sirgėdas turned provider this time, setting up Gabriel Debeljuh, who finished to add his name to the scoresheet.
Kauno Žalgiris completed the rout in the 77th minute when Renan Oliveira won possession and took advantage of a mistake from the Džiugas goalkeeper to score the fifth.
The emphatic 5-0 victory moves Kauno Žalgiris onto 42 points as they continue their pursuit of the Toplyga title, six points short of leaders Sūduva and they have a game in hand. Meanwhile Džiugas remain fifth with 38 points.
