Lithuanian vice-champions FC Hegelmann have announced that long-time captain Klaudijus Upstas will leave the club after six years of service, marking the end of an era for the Vilnius-based side.
The 31-year-old defender joined Hegelmann in 2020, when the club was still competing in the Pirma Lyga. In his first season, Upstas helped the team achieve promotion to Lithuania’s top flight for the first time in the club’s history.
Over six seasons, Upstas made 192 appearances for Hegelmann, scoring 9 goals. During his tenure, the club reached the Lithuanian Cup final three times, finishing as runners-up on each occasion, and twice finished as A Lyga vice-champions (2024 and 2025). He also represented Hegelmann in European competition for the first time.
Reflecting on his departure, Upstas said:
“After six years, it’s time to say goodbye to Hegelmann. During this period, I played in three cup finals – although we didn’t lift the trophy, every final taught me resilience and strengthened my bond with the team. Twice we became A Lyga runners-up, proving that we grew, developed, and always fought to the end. I joined the club when we were still in the Pirma Lyga This journey changed me fundamentally – I learned discipline, responsibility, and grew both as a footballer and as a person. I want to thank my teammates, coaches, staff, and fans. Thank you for your trust, for the moments shared, and for always being one family. Though we part ways, all memories and experiences will stay with me. Thank you, and goodbye.”
While at Hegelmann, Upstas also made his senior debut for the Lithuanian national team and has earned 12 caps since 2022.
Hegelmann director Dainius Šumauskas highlighted Upstas’ importance to the club:
“Klaudijus was more than a player – he was the pillar and leader of our team, setting standards of professionalism. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering character helped the club achieve its highest results in history. We are deeply grateful and wish him the very best in the next stage. Klaudijus will always remain an important part of our blue-and-white story.”
According to Lithuanian media reports, Upstas’ next destination will be the 11-time A Lyga champions FK Žalgiris Vilnius.
