Benchaib penalty enough for Kauno Žalgiris to get three points against Dainava

In the opening match of A Lyga’s 30th round, league leaders FK Kauno Žalgiris needed just a single goal to secure all three points, defeating bottom side DFK Dainava Alytus 1:0 on the road.

Kauno Žalgiris, coached by Eivinas Černiauskas, went into the match eight points clear of second-placed FC Hegelmann. In the previous round, a stunning strike from Georgian forward Temur Chogadze helped Kauno Žalgiris snatch a draw against their direct rivals Hegelmann, maintaining that eight-point lead. Rewarding his heroics, Černiauskas gave Chogadze his first start since August 30.

The visitors dominated early in the game, creating several promising chances. Amine Benchaib and Dejan Georgijević missed opportunities from good positions, while Volodymyr Krynskyi kept Dainava in the game with a couple of crucial saves.

In the 25th minute, a foul by Daniel Alemao on Haymenn Bah-Traore inside the penalty area gave Kauno Žalgiris a spot-kick, calmly converted by Amine Benchaib for his 12th of the season.

In the second half, Kauno Žalgiris continued to create chances but struggled to extend their lead. Still, their solid defense ensured they held on for a vital victory.

Meanwhile, DFK Dainava Alytus were looking to climb out of the league’s last place but came up short. With 68 points, Kauno Žalgiris moves closer to clinching the championship, while Dainava remain in 10th with 16 points.
