In the only Latvian Virslīga fixture of Matchday 31, FS Jelgava battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against FK Auda, thanks to captain Kristers Penkevics, who scored his second goal of the season in the second half.
Auda, locked in a tight race with BFC Daugavpils for fourth place and the final European qualification spot, traveled to Jelgava in search of a crucial victory. The hosts, once dominant at home in the first part of the season, have struggled in recent weeks, managing just one win in their last seven matches in all competitions – a 2-0 triumph against SK Super Nova two months ago.
Earlier this year, both teams had defended home turf impressively in head-to-head encounters: Auda secured two 2-0 victories, while Jelgava defeated them 3-1 on May 15.
Jelgava started brightly. A sharp combination between the Hašek brothers set up Filip Hašek, whose first-time strike clipped the outside of the post – an early warning for Jurģis Kalns’ side.
But it was Auda who struck first. A costly mistake by key defender Ondrej Ullman gifted possession to Eduards Dašķevičs, who rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted into the empty net to make it 1-0.
The second half saw both teams exchange chances. The best opportunity fell to Kingsley Emenike, whose close-range effort was brilliantly denied by Jelgava’s keeper Roberts Ozols with a quick reaction save. Jelgava eventually found their equalizer. After an Auda clearance from a set piece, Holoubek recycled the ball into the path of Penkevics. The captain unleashed a precise strike from outside the box that beat Ozols, bringing the hosts level at 1-1.
The goal lifted the tempo, but neither side could find a winner. For the first time this season, Jelgava and Auda finished level against each other.
The result leaves Auda just one point ahead of Daugavpils in the battle for fourth, while Jelgava remain safely in sixth place, five points clear of FK Tukums 2000.
Looking ahead, Jelgava will visit Super Nova next Saturday in the final round before the October international break, while Auda face a tough trip to Daugavpils a day later in what could prove a decisive clash for European qualification.
