Reigning Latvian champions and current Virslīga runners-up RFS continued their dominant form with a convincing 4:0 victory over Metta at Slokas Stadium in Jūrmala. This marked RFS’s eighth consecutive league win.
Earlier in the season, Metta stunned RFS with a narrow 1:0 victory, but the reigning Latvian champions took revenge with a 2:0 win in the second round — and now delivered a statement 4:0 thrashing in their third meeting.
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Swedish giants Malmö FF, RFS manager Viktors Morozs made several changes to the lineup following the match against Levadia, resting key players to keep them fresh for the European test. Rendijs Šibass and Roberts Veips both earned their first league starts of the season, while Mor Talla Gaye, Jérémy Porsan-Clémenté, Yukiyoshi Karashima, and Petr Mareš were also named in the starting XI.
Despite the rotation, RFS took full control of the match from the outset. In the 10th minute, Stefan Panić delivered a precise pass into the box for Jānis Ikaunieks, who fired a low shot off the inside of the post to make it 1:0 — his eighth goal of the season.
Metta, struggling to settle, made an early substitution in the 16th minute, replacing Sierra Leonean midfielder Mohamed Kamara with his compatriot Saymah Kamara.
Midway through the first half, Dāvis Ikaunieks was brought down in the box, earning RFS a penalty. Panić stepped up and confidently converted, doubling the lead with his fourth goal in five matches and further establishing himself as the team’s primary penalty taker.
The second half brought more fireworks. Around the hour mark, Mor Talla Gaye danced past his defender on the wing and unleashed a stunning strike into the far top corner, extending the lead to 3:0. It was the Senegalese winger’s seventh goal of the season, and arguably one of the most spectacular goals of the campaign so far.
In the 70th minute, Serbian midfielder Strahinja Rakić made his debut for RFS, coming on as a substitute.
The final blow came in the 77th minute, when Yukiyoshi Karashima intercepted a pass and threaded a perfect ball to Darko Lemajić, who calmly slotted it past the keeper. It was Lemajić’s 17th goal of the season, maintaining his place as the league’s top scorer.
RFS not only extended their winning streak to eight matches, but also ended Metta’s two-game run of victories, showing their depth and form ahead of their European challenge.
