Several Latvian internationals were involved for their clubs across Europe on Sunday, with Andrejs Cigaņiks, Lūkass Vapne and Markuss Strods all seeing action in Switzerland, Norway and Ireland respectively, while Marko Regža remained an unused substitute in the Czech top flight.
In Norway’s second tier, Lūkass Vapne registered his second consecutive assist, but Sogndal could not complete a comeback after falling 0-3 behind in the first half against Lyn, eventually losing 2-3. Vapne set up Sogndal’s opening goal in the 49th minute before being substituted in the 79th. The 21-year-old has now recorded two goals and two assists in 16 league appearances this season. Sogndal sit 11th in the table with 18 points from 16 matches and will host Bryne next weekend.
In the Swiss Super League, Andrejs Cigaņiks came off the bench as Luzern suffered a 0-3 away defeat to Sion. The match turned in the hosts’ favour almost immediately after Luzern were reduced to ten men in the third minute following a straight red card. Sion took advantage by scoring once before the break and adding two more goals in the second half. Cigaņiks entered the match in the 76th minute.
Luzern have now opened the new league campaign with back-to-back defeats, with the Latvian defender featuring as a substitute in both matches. Their next fixture comes next Sunday away to St. Gallen.
In the League of Ireland Premier Division, Markuss Strods made a late substitute appearance as Bohemians drew 1-1 with Galway United. The Latvian U-21 international entered the pitch in the 83rd minute. It was his 16th league appearance of the campaign, having contributed two goals and four assists.
Bohemians remain third in the standings with 44 points after 26 matches, level on points with second-placed St. Patrick’s Athletic and seven behind leaders Shamrock Rovers. Their attention now turns to Thursday’s UEFA Conference League third qualifying round clash against Danish side Midtjylland.
Meanwhile, in the Czech top flight, Marko Regža remained on the bench as Hradec Kralove played out a goalless draw away to Bohemians Praha 1905. Hradec have collected four points from their opening two league matches after following up an opening-round victory with this draw. Their next fixture comes on Thursday, when they host Turkish giants Besiktas in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
