Kauno Žalgiris’ unbeaten start to the Toplyga season ended on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by TransINVEST at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium.
The visitors went in front late in the first half when Stefan Miloševič switched the play and found Ukrainian Yegor Glushach, who drove a low finish into the near corner. TransINVEST almost doubled their lead soon after, but Xabi Auzmendi was unable to repeat the move.
Glushach made it 2-0 in the 55th minute after goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas left his area and miscontrolled, allowing the forward to score unchallenged for his second of the match. Kauno Žalgiris responded with greater urgency, with Yukiyoshi Karashima forcing openings and Davis Ikaunieks firing into the side-netting.
Ikaunieks pulled a goal back from the penalty spot late on after a foul inside the home box, and Valdas Paulauskas had a stoppage-time chance to equalise, but his header went wide.
Despite the setback in the ninth round, the defending Champions remain atop the league table with 22 points, while TransINVEST move up to third with 14.
