FK Panevėžys produced a surprise result in Matchday 35 of the Lithuanian Toplyga, defeating fourth-placed TransINVEST 1-0 at home. Isaac Asante’s second-half header secured all three points for the hosts, dealing TransINVEST a significant blow to their chances of finishing among the top three.

The visitors entered the encounter looking to strengthen their position in the race for a podium finish, while Panevėžys were already guaranteed to finish the campaign in seventh place.

TransINVEST made the more promising start, taking the initiative and creating several opportunities during the opening stages. Panevėžys goalkeeper Vytautas Černiauskas was called into action on multiple occasions, helping the hosts withstand the visitors’ early pressure.

Despite TransINVEST’s attacking efforts, Panevėžys remained organised defensively and managed to keep the score level heading into the interval.

The hosts eventually made the breakthrough in the 52nd minute. Rokas Rasimavičius delivered an accurate cross from the right flank into the penalty area, where Asante rose above his marker to win the aerial duel and direct a header into the net.

The goal gave Panevėžys a 1-0 advantage, leaving TransINVEST needing to find a response to keep their hopes of collecting three points alive.

However, the visitors were unable to break down the Panevėžys defence, with the hosts successfully protecting their narrow lead until the final whistle.

The victory was Panevėžys’ 11th of the Toplyga campaign, taking their points tally to 38 and confirming a seventh-place finish.

TransINVEST, meanwhile, remain fourth with 49 points. The defeat mathematically ends their title hopes and significantly complicates their chances of finishing among the league’s top three.
