The Tonybet Virslīga resumed after the international break on Friday evening with a dramatic Matchday 17 encounter in Tukums, where FK Tukums 2000 came within minutes of securing victory despite playing the entire second half with ten men, only for BFC Daugavpils to rescue a 1-1 draw late on.

The home side made the brighter start and created the first dangerous opportunities of the match. Joseph Ede Oloko was at the centre of much of Tukums’ attacking play, forcing Jānis Beks into two saves before coming agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute when his effort struck the post.

Daugavpils gradually settled into the contest and threatened through Rostand Ndjiki and Joel Yakubu, but neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval. The visitors’ best chance came five minutes before halftime when after a major mistake by Tukums defender, Yakubu was able to get of a close-range effort that was tipped over the crossbar by Ivans Baturins.

The turning point appeared to arrive immediately after the restart. Just seconds into the second half, Tukums defender Kristers Volkovs received his second yellow card of the evening after bringing down Ndjiki, reducing the hosts to ten men for the remainder of the match.

With a numerical advantage, Daugavpils began to dominate possession and territory. William Mukwelle tested Baturins from distance, while Yakubu, Garzha and Ndjiki all threatened as the visitors looked to make the extra player count.

Instead, it was Tukums who struck first. In the 75th minute, a swift attack carved open the Daugavpils defence. Maksym Derkach delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area where substitute Rūdolfs Melķis arrived perfectly to slot the ball into goal and give the ten-man hosts a surprise lead.

The goal sparked a determined response from Daugavpils, who pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Their pressure finally paid off two minutes from time.

After Gļebs Mihaļcovs won a free kick in an advanced position, Joel Yakubu delivered the ball into the penalty area where Rostand Ndjiki rose highest and powered a header beyond Baturins to level the match at 1-1.

The visitors nearly completed the turnaround in stoppage time. Mukwelle, Mihalcovs and Ndjiki all forced saves from Baturins as Daugavpils laid siege to the Tukums goal, while at the other end Oloko missed a promising counter-attacking opportunity that could have restored the hosts’ lead.

After five minutes of added time, the points were shared. The result leaves BFC Daugavpils sixth in the Tonybet Virslīga standings after 17 matches, while FK Tukums 2000 remain eighth with 14 points. Daugavpils will return to action on Wednesday when they host SK Super Nova, while Tukums will again be at home a day later against FK Auda.
