Riga FC Women successfully defended their Baltic Women’s Football League (BWFL) title with a commanding 7-0 victory over MFA Žalgiris-MRU in Saturday’s final in Riga.
The Latvian champions were 4-0 up at the break after two goals apiece from Japan forward Minami Oi and Sierra Leone attacker Kumba Brima. Both players completed hat-tricks in the second half, before Venezuela’s Karena Boliva added the final goal.
The sides had drawn 2-2 when they met in the first phase of this season’s competition, while Riga FC Women also beat the Vilnius team 3-1 in last year’s final.
Riga FC Women finished top of the first phase with eight points from four matches and then won 3-0 against Lithuania’s champions Gintra in the semi-finals. MFA Žalgiris also collected eight points in the opening phase and reached the final after drawing 0-0 with RFS Women before progressing on penalties.
In the bronze-medal match played earlier on Saturday in Riga, Gintra beat RFS Women 5-0. In the first phase the two teams had been level on seven points, and Gintra repeated their strong record in the third-place play-off after winning bronze last season.
BWFL again featured six teams, with the top two women’s clubs from each of the three Baltic nations taking part.
