Potential Latvia international Denniss Cirkins has found a new club ahead of the new season, joining English Championship side Queens Park Rangers as a free agent.
The 24-year-old left-back spent the previous five seasons with Sunderland, making 127 appearances for the club. During that period, he helped the Black Cats rise from League One to the Premier League, eventually making his top-flight debut last season and featuring in eight Premier League matches.
Following the expiration of his contract at Sunderland, Cirkins has now signed for Queens Park Rangers, who have spent the last 11 seasons in the English Championship. The London club finished 15th last season, with their most recent Premier League campaign coming in 2014/15.
Cirkins is widely expected to make his long-awaited debut for the Latvia national team during September’s UEFA Nations League fixtures. By joining QPR, he also becomes only the third Latvian footballer to represent the club.
Former Latvia captain Kaspars Gorkšs made 124 appearances for the QPR between 2009 and 2011, while goalkeeper Elvijs Putniņš was also part of the club during the early 2010s, although he never featured in an official first-team match.
Queens Park Rangers begin their new Championship campaign on Saturday with an away fixture against Portsmouth.
