Männilaan haunts former club in Kalju victory over Kuressaare
Photo: Anna Andreas Nõmme Kalju strengthened their hopes of securing European qualification with a narrow 1-0 home victory over FC Kuressaare in Matchday 35 of the Estonian Premium Liiga. Mattias Männilaan scored the only goal of the afternoon against his former club, leaving Kuressaare facing a decisive final-round encounter in their battle to avoid the relegation play-off.
Heading into the penultimate round, both teams had plenty at stake. Kalju were fighting for a top-three finish, which would guarantee European football next season, while Kuressaare were looking to secure at least eighth place and avoid the relegation play-off.
Kalju entered the encounter with an impressive record against their opponents, having won 13 consecutive meetings before the teams played out a goalless draw in Kuressaare in July.
Despite Kalju’s strong record in this fixture, it was Kuressaare who created the first major opportunity. In the ninth minute, Jürisoo broke forward down the flank and delivered an excellent pass into the penalty area for Visse. However, the unmarked striker somehow failed to convert from just three metres out, wasting a golden opportunity to give the visitors an early lead.
Kalju gradually took control of possession and began putting pressure on the Kuressaare defence. Männilaan briefly thought he had opened the scoring when his header found the net, but the referee had already blown for a foul.
The hosts continued to threaten through set pieces and deliveries into the penalty area, with Ivanov heavily involved in their attacking play. One of Kalju’s best opportunities arrived midway through the first half when Jekimov unleashed a powerful effort from a tight angle, forcing Kuressaare goalkeeper Karl-Romet Nõmm to turn the ball behind for a corner.
The resulting set piece almost produced the opening goal. Siht rose to meet the delivery and directed a header towards goal, with Nõmm already beaten. However, Prunn was perfectly positioned on the goal line to make a crucial clearance and keep the score level.
As the half progressed, the contest became more balanced, with neither side able to create many clear-cut chances. The teams went into the interval level at 0-0, with both sides having missed an excellent opportunity to take the lead.
However, the deadlock was broken shortly after the restart, with a familiar face coming back to haunt Kuressaare. In the opening minutes of the second half, Jekimov launched a long throw into the penalty area. The ball took a deflection off Kobin’s head and fell kindly to Männilaan, who controlled it before finishing from around ten metres out.
The goal gave Kalju a 1-0 advantage and continued Männilaan’s remarkable scoring record against his former club. Since leaving Kuressaare for Kalju, the striker has scored four goals in five league appearances against his former teammates..
The visitors gradually began enjoying more possession and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Švedovski attempted a long-range effort that bounced narrowly wide, while Kuressaare also looked to create opportunities through crosses and set pieces.
However, despite their increased attacking intent, the visitors struggled to seriously trouble Pürg in the Kalju goal.
The hosts continued to look dangerous from set pieces and almost doubled their advantage in the 74th minute. Following a corner, Orlov managed to get two touches on the ball in front of goal, forcing another corner. The subsequent delivery found him completely unmarked inside the penalty area, but his attempted finish from around ten metres failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
Kuressaare continued searching for a way back into the contest, but their attacking efforts lacked the necessary quality in the final third. In the closing stages, Kobin had an opportunity to equalise after Andreas delivered a cross into the penalty area, but the defender’s header missed the target.
The narrow victory kept Kalju firmly in contention for a top-three finish and European qualification heading into the final round. For Kuressaare, the defeat extended their run without scoring against Kalju to eight consecutive matches.
More importantly, the result left Kuressaare on 36 points, one behind both Nõmme United and Pärnu Vaprus, who sit on 37 points apiece.
The final round will therefore be decisive in the battle to avoid the relegation play-off, with Kuressaare hosting Nõmme United in a direct encounter, while Vaprus face Tartu Tammeka.
Kalju, meanwhile, will enter their final match against already-crowned champions FCI Levadia.
