Paide Linnameeskond strengthened their position in the race for second place and European football with a narrow 1-0 away victory over Pärnu Vaprus in Matchday 35 of the Estonian Premium Liiga. A first-half goal credited to Dawda Darboe proved decisive as the visitors bounced back from their midweek defeat against Nõmme Kalju, while Vaprus remained in danger of finishing in the relegation play-off position.

Paide entered Saturday’s encounter looking to recover from a disappointing 2-0 home defeat against Kalju earlier in the week, which had prevented them from securing a top-four finish and European qualification.

Despite that setback, Paide remained second in the standings and knew victory in Pärnu would keep them in a strong position heading into the final round. Vaprus, meanwhile, were fighting to avoid the relegation play-off position, making the match equally important for the hosts.

Paide were forced into several changes, with goalkeeper Marko Meerits unavailable through injury. Gambian goalkeeper Ebrima Jarju made his first appearance since September 6.

The visitors suffered an early setback when striker Kristofer Piht was forced off with an injury in just the third minute, with Darboe replacing him. Despite the disruption, Paide made the breakthrough with their first dangerous attacking opportunity.

In the 15th minute, Šurõgin found Miller unmarked inside the penalty area. The midfielder took a touch to move past a defender before striking towards goal.

His effort took a deflection off substitute Darboe and found the back of the net, giving Paide a 1-0 advantage. Although Miller initially appeared to be the goalscorer, the goal was officially credited to Darboe, with Miller receiving the assist.

Vaprus attempted to respond and gradually grew into the contest. The hosts appealed for a penalty when Kapper went down near the byline after a challenge from Kanne, but the referee allowed play to continue. Another potential penalty incident followed when Limberg fell inside the area. The situation was reviewed by VAR, but no infringement was found.

Vaprus also threatened through Viidas, who drove into the penalty area from the left flank, but his low attempt was comfortably collected by the Paide goalkeeper.

The hosts continued to improve as the first half progressed, with Sild delivering a dangerous low pass across the face of goal that required Jarju to intervene. However, Paide maintained their narrow advantage until the interval, with neither side creating many clear-cut opportunities during the opening 45 minutes.

The visitors began the second half with greater attacking intent. Following a short corner, Hugo found space for a shot that flew narrowly over the crossbar, while Palacios later produced a dangerous effort that missed the near post.

Vaprus responded with a major opportunity when Aloe delivered an excellent cross towards the far post. Kapper found himself completely unmarked just a few metres from goal, but the winger failed to direct his header on target, wasting one of the hosts’ best chances to equalise.

Paide’s afternoon was further complicated by another injury when Siim Luts was forced off, with Jobarteh entering the match. The visitors made additional substitutions in the 71st minute, introducing experienced players Henrik Ojamaa and Siim Luts alongside Cabral as they looked to protect their advantage.

The latter nearly doubled Paide’s lead with one of the most spectacular attempts of the afternoon. In the closing stages, Cabral stepped up to take a free kick from approximately 30 metres and struck a powerful effort that crashed against the post, leaving the hosts fortunate to remain just one goal behind.

The hosts made several attacking substitutions during the closing stages, introducing fresh players in an attempt to rescue a point. However, Paide’s defence held firm, with Jarju collecting a late cross from Viidas despite initially struggling to secure the ball.

The final whistle confirmed a valuable 1-0 victory for Paide, allowing them to remain second in the Premium Liiga standings heading into the final round.

Vaprus, meanwhile, failed to collect any points and remain in danger of slipping into the relegation play-off position. They sit just one point ahead of Kuressaare, who have two matches remaining and travel to face Nõmme Kalju on Sunday.
