Estonian league leaders FCI Levadia took a giant step towards the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League after producing one of the most emphatic European performances in the club’s recent history, thrashing Welsh side Caernarfon Town 5-0 away from home.

Five different players found the net as Vjatšeslav Zahovaiko side completely outclassed the Welsh Cup winners, leaving next week’s return leg in Tallinn appearing little more than a formality.

Levadia entered the tie as favourites, but few could have predicted such a dominant display on a difficult pitch in North Wales. After a cautious opening spell, the Estonian champions broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. Mihkel Ainsalu delivered a perfectly weighted cross towards the back post, where captain Rasmus Peetson rose highest to guide a header into the corner for his first European goal of the campaign.

Caernarfon briefly threatened after Karl Andre Vallner’s misplaced pass gifted the hosts a dangerous free-kick, but the Levadia goalkeeper quickly redeemed himself, comfortably dealing with the resulting effort before denying another long-range strike moments later.

Levadia continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage six minutes before half-time through a moment of individual brilliance from João Pedro. After Mark Oliver Roosnupp kept possession alive around the edge of the penalty area, the Brazilian winger unleashed a low strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The visitors were not finished there. Just before the interval, Levadia struck from a corner. Peetson narrowly missed making contact, but the loose ball fell kindly for Roosnupp, who reacted quickest to smash home from close range and send the Estonian side into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Any hopes of a Welsh comeback disappeared almost immediately after the restart. Only a minute into the second half, Bubacarr Tambedou produced a superb piece of individual skill to spin away from his marker before slipping a perfectly timed through ball into the path of Mihkel Ainsalu. The experienced midfielder kept his composure and calmly rounded the goalkeeper to extend Levadia’s lead to four.

Tambedou continued to torment the home defence and was heavily involved again shortly after the hour mark. The striker raced clear before being pulled down inside the penalty area by Nash, who received a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Although Robert Kirss’ replacement Maksim Skvortsov blazed the resulting penalty over the crossbar, Levadia’s dominance never looked in doubt.

Their fifth goal eventually arrived in the 78th minute. Another flowing attacking move saw Ainsalu pick out substitute Enock Otoo inside the penalty area, with the Ghanaian forward finishing confidently into the bottom corner to complete an outstanding evening for the visitors.

Levadia could easily have added to their tally. Tambedou had a goal ruled out for a foul, Otoo came close to grabbing a second, while Kirss also saw an effort chalked off for offside.

The comprehensive victory leaves Levadia with one foot firmly in the second qualifying round, where Swedish side IFK Göteborg await the winners.
