FS Jelgava produced an emphatic response to their previous defeat against Tukums 2000, scoring four times at the Zemgale Olympic Centre to secure a convincing 4-1 victory in Tonybet Virslīga Round 19.

Jelgava looked the more dangerous side from the opening stages. Early opportunities fell to Gļebs Patika and Rihards Bečers, but Tukums goalkeeper Ivans Baturins was alert to keep the scores level. At the other end, Ede Oloko tested the hosts with several long-range efforts, although none troubled Adam Dvorak significantly.

The breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute from a set piece. Miloš Pudil delivered a dangerous corner into the six-yard box where Maksims Semeško rose highest to head the ball into the net. A brief VAR review followed, but the goal was eventually confirmed, allowing Semeško to celebrate his first-ever Virslīga goal and hand Jelgava a deserved lead.

Tukums attempted to respond before halftime, with Oloko and Kaspars Anmanis both going close, but the visitors entered the break trailing by a single goal.

The turning point of the match arrived shortly after the restart. In the 54th minute Kristers Volkovs was initially penalised for a foul on Emīls Šmaukštelis. Following a VAR review, the yellow card was upgraded to a straight red, leaving Tukums to play the remaining half-hour with ten men.

Jelgava wasted little time taking advantage of their numerical superiority. Just four minutes later Šmaukštelis burst forward and delivered a low ball into the penalty area where Pudil arrived to fire home from close range and double the hosts’ advantage.

With Tukums struggling to contain Jelgava’s attacks, a third goal followed in the 65th minute. Once again Šmaukštelis was involved, providing the cross that found Armands Pētersons inside the box. The defender made no mistake, calmly finishing to make it 3-0.

The game was effectively over five minutes later when Roberts Meļķis added a fourth. After his initial effort was blocked, the ball fell kindly back into his path and he slotted home from close range to cap a dominant second-half display from the home side.

Despite being four goals behind, Tukums continued to battle and were rewarded late on. In the 87th minute Kristaps Klaviņš provided a precise pass into the box for Ede Oloko, who finished confidently into the bottom corner to score a deserved consolation goal.

The visitors even threatened to reduce the deficit further in stoppage time when Shun Shibata unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but Dvorak produced an excellent save to preserve Jelgava’s three-goal margin.

After a difficult run of results, the victory provided an important boost for Jelgava, who were clinical once Tukums were reduced to ten men. The hosts scored four times after the break and never looked in danger of surrendering control.

The result allowed Jelgava to leapfrog Tukums in the standings, moving up to seventh place with 19 points, while Tukums slipped behind them on 17 points.

Jelgava return to action in four days’ time with an away trip to Super Nova, while Tukums will look to bounce back on 26 June when they travel to face bottom-placed Ogre United.
