FK Žalgiris Vilnius came from behind to draw 1-1 against FK Banga Gargždai in Matchday 9 of the Lithuanian Toplyga, as new head coach Andrius Skerla began his tenure with a point in front of the home crowd.
Former Hegelmann manager and current Lithuania U21 head coach Skerla was appointed just a few days ago, following the departure of Rolandas Džiaukštas. The latter had taken over the team during a difficult period at the end of last season, guiding Žalgiris to a top-three finish and securing at least UEFA Conference League qualification for upcoming summer. Despite strong and dominant performances statistically this season, results had not followed.
Skerla made several changes to the starting lineup compared to the previous match. Venezuelan goalkeeper Carlos Olses returned between the posts, while Patrik Matyžonok made his first appearance and first start of the season in defence. Ovidijus Verbickas and Nemanja Mihajlović were also handed their first starts since the opening game of the campaign.
Žalgiris controlled much of the early play, winning several corners, though none led to clear chances. The first real action for either goalkeeper came in the 20th minute, when Banga launched a quick counter-attack. Nigerian forward Aaron Olugbogi struck from distance towards the bottom corner, but Olses reacted well to make the save.
It did not take long for the breakthrough to arrive. After a series of corners – this time at the other end – Olugbogi found space outside the box and unleashed a shot, which was redirected in the middle of the penalty area by Junior Simao. The Guinea-Bissau defender scored his first goal of the season to give Banga the lead.
Žalgiris struggled to create clear opportunities before the break, with their best effort coming from Georgian full-back Mamatsashvili, whose long-range attempt flew just over the crossbar. Skerla was forced to look for changes in the second half.
The early stages of the second half produced little in terms of clear chances, but Žalgiris gradually took control of the game. Their pressure paid off in the 77th minute, when Paulius Golubickas struck from distance to score his first goal of the season and level the match.
Despite a lengthy nine minutes of added time and several late corners for the hosts, Žalgiris were unable to create any major chances, and Skerla had to settle for a draw in his first match in charge.
After nine matches, Žalgiris sit third in the table with 12 points, while Banga move to 11 points, joining a group alongside Panevėžys and TransINVEST just behind the Vilnius side.
Skerla will have another opportunity to claim his first win next Sunday when Žalgiris travel to face Džiugas Telšiai, while Banga will host Hegelmann on the same day.
In the other Matchday 9 fixture played today, struggling Riteriai were held to a goalless draw by Hegelmann.
