Derby No. 48: seven points or one – a night that could shape the Virslīga title race

The Matchday 18 of the 2026 Virslīga season concludes on Wednesday evening with the match everybody has been waiting for. Under the lights of Skonto Stadium, league leaders RFS and defending champions Riga FC will meet in the 48th edition of the Rīga Derby, a fixture that has increasingly become Latvian football’s defining rivalry. While there is still plenty of football left to be played this season, there is no escaping the significance of this encounter. An RFS victory would extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points, while a win for Riga FC would reduce the gap to just one and completely transform the complexion of the title race heading into the summer months.

The standings reflect just how dominant both clubs have been throughout the campaign. RFS arrive as league leaders with 46 points from 17 matches, while Riga FC sit second with 42. Both sides have distanced themselves from the chasing pack and once again appear destined to fight among themselves for Latvian football’s biggest prize. Their first meeting of the season provided a reminder of how evenly matched they remain. Back in April at LNK Sporta Parks, supporters witnessed one of the most entertaining matches of the year as the teams played out a dramatic 3-3 draw. Riga FC came back from a two-goal deficit and rescued a point in the late stages of the match through Brazilian defender Caio Ferreira, ensuring that neither side would gain an early psychological advantage in the championship battle.

Looking at the history of the fixture, there is remarkably little separating the two clubs despite RFS holding a narrow overall advantage. Wednesday’s encounter will be the 48th meeting between the rivals across all competitions. Of the previous 47 clashes, RFS have emerged victorious on 16 occasions, while Riga FC have celebrated 13 wins. Nineteen matches have ended level after regulation time, a statistic that perfectly illustrates how competitive this rivalry has become since Riga FC’s arrival among Latvian football’s elite. RFS have scored 59 goals in the fixture’s history compared to Riga FC’s 52, giving the current league leaders a modest edge both in victories and goals scored.

Recent meetings suggest supporters should prepare for another entertaining spectacle. The previous three derbies have produced two draws and a dramatic 4-3 victory for RFS at the end of last season, a result achieved despite Riga FC having already secured the championship title. To find the last time Riga FC defeated RFS during regular play, one must go back almost exactly a year to July 18, 2025, when the defending champions secured a convincing 3-1 victory at Skonto Stadium. Since then, RFS have enjoyed the upper hand, though the margins between the teams remain extremely fine.

Current form only adds to the intrigue. Since the opening-round draw, RFS have been flawless in league competition, winning all eight of their second-round matches while scoring 25 goals and conceding just six. Viktors Morozs’ side have combined attacking efficiency with defensive stability, creating the kind of consistency that wins championships. Yet Riga FC’s numbers are hardly less impressive. The defending champions have collected 22 of a possible 24 points during the same period, dropping points only in a 2-2 draw against Jelgava in May. In most seasons, such a run would be enough to lead the league comfortably. This year it has merely been enough to stay within touching distance of RFS.

Individual quality has often defined the biggest moments in this rivalry, and Wednesday match is unlikely to be any different. Both teams boast some of the most dangerous attacking players in the division, with their leading goalscorers also featuring prominently among the league’s top scorers. Riga FC striker Mohammed Badamosi has enjoyed an outstanding campaign and currently sits third in the Virslīga scoring charts with 12 goals. On the opposite side stands RFS striker Darko Lemajic, who has scored eight goals this season and occupies fourth place among the league’s top scorers. The Serbian has an even more impressive record in the derby itself, leading the all-time goalscoring standings for this fixture with nine goals.

Lemajic’s name sits at the top of a distinguished list of derby specialists. Emerson Deocleciano follows with eight goals, while Antonijs Černomordijs has found the net six times. Tomaš Simkovič and Armands Pētersons each scored four goals in the rivalry, while Douglas Aurelio rounds out the leading scorers with three.

Statistics, however, rarely tell the entire story when it comes to derby football. The reality feels particularly relevant this time. For RFS, victory would represent a significant step towards reclaiming the championship and create a seven-point cushion over their nearest challengers. For Riga FC, the equation is equally simple. Win, and the title race becomes a one-point affair with half a season still to play.

Forty-seven matches have already been written into the history of Latvia’s biggest football rivalry. Wednesday night at Skonto Stadium brings the 48th chapter, one that could prove to be among the most significant yet. Whether it ends with RFS strengthening their grip on first place or Riga FC breathing new life into the championship battle, Latvian football is set for another memorable derby night.
