Tonybet Virslīga round 20 produced another dramatic encounter as Ogre United struck in the opening minute, surrendered the lead, but completed a remarkable late comeback thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from captain Kristers Čudars to defeat FK Tukums 2000 3-2 and claim only their second victory of the season.

Ogre United head coach Viktors Mazurs handed a starting debut to one of the club’s newest signings, centre-back Aleksejs Kudeļkins, while the other summer arrivals began on the bench. On the opposite side, Tukums manager Kristaps Dišlers faced the difficult task of replacing league top scorer Joseph Ede Oloko, whose loan spell expired with the opening of the transfer window as he returned to parent club FK Liepāja.

The hosts could hardly have wished for a better start in their search for a first home victory of the campaign. After just 40 seconds, Mārtiņš Lormanis delivered a cross from the right and captain Kristers Čudars powered a header into the net to put Ogre 1-0 ahead.

Tukums responded impressively and quickly found the answer to the question of who would replace Oloko’s goals. Striker Ruslans Deružinskis scored twice in the space of 11 minutes to turn the match around. First, he collected a pass from Maksym Derkach before drilling a precise finish into the bottom corner. Soon afterwards, Kaspars Anmanis supplied an almost identical assist and Deružinskis once again found the same corner to make it 2-1. The brace took the striker to seven league goals this season, already comfortably surpassing his previous Virslīga career tally of four.

Tukums continued to threaten and came close to extending their advantage before the break. Maksym Derkach crashed a powerful effort against the post from long range, while the rebound fell kindly to Bogdans Samoilovs, who had both time and space to score. However, goalkeeper Ņikita Parfjonovs reacted brilliantly to deny him and keep Ogre firmly in the contest.

The second half remained open, with both teams continuing to attack and Tukums creating the more dangerous opportunities for long spells. However, everything changed in the 77th minute when a costly misunderstanding between the Tukums goalkeeper and his defenders gifted the hosts an equaliser. Brazilian forward Felipe Machado reacted quickest to the loose ball, scoring his first goal of the season to level the match at 2-2.

Both teams pushed for a winner and four minutes of stoppage time were added. Unfortunately for Tukums, defender Rūdolfs Reingolcs endured a disastrous final minute. First, he conceded an unnecessary free-kick near the halfway line, allowing Ogre to send a long delivery into the penalty area. As the ball arrived, Reingolcs caught Ugandan forward Johnson Kabagambe high on the ankle, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a penalty. Following a VAR review, the challenge was also upgraded to a red card, bringing Reingolcs’ afternoon to an abrupt end.

Captain Kristers Čudars stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick to score his second goal of the match and secure only the second Tonybet Virslīga victory in Ogre United’s history.

The victory moves Ogre United seven points behind both FK Tukums 2000 and FK Grobiņa in the battle to avoid relegation.

Ogre United return to action in four days when they travel to face FK Liepāja, while Tukums will host SK Super Nova on 1 July.
