Mindaugas Čepas says he wants Lithuania to play with courage and attacking intent when he takes charge of the men’s national team for the November international window. The coach was appointed earlier this week, with a decision on the head coach position beyond the upcoming fixtures to be made after the cycle.

“I would like us to be a brave team that is not afraid to make mistakes, plays attacking football, enjoys the game and creates chances,” Čepas said. “In defence, of course, there should be less risk. In attack, I think we can give players more freedom to improvise near the opposition penalty area and ease the pressure.”

Čepas said he had not expected the appointment, having spent the past two years working with Lithuania’s U-19 side. He was approached by technical director Deividas Šemberas late last week and said his focus was now on the next two matches. He also praised former head coach Edgaras Jankauskas for helping unite the squad, staff, supporters and wider football community, adding that changes would need to be made step by step.
