Riga secures 11th straight victory with 2-0 win over Grobiņa

Latvian Virslīga leaders Riga FC continued their winning streak with a 2-0 away victory over Grobiņa, marking their 11th consecutive triumph. Raivis Jurkovskis was instrumental in the win, delivering a precise cross for the opening goal and scoring the second himself.

Riga took the lead in the 19th minute. Jurkovskis sent in a cross from the right, and while Reginaldo Ramires misfired an attempted bicycle kick, Iago Siqueira was well-positioned behind him and headed the ball home for a 1-0 advantage. It was the Brazilian’s second goal in the Virslīga.

The visitors doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time. Brian Peña split the defense with a sharp through ball to Jurkovskis, who accelerated into the box and fired a left-footed shot into the near corner to make it 2-0.

Riga’s defense remained solid throughout the match, conceding few chances. National team goalkeeper Krišjānis Zviedris had a quiet afternoon, with Grobiņa unable to pose a significant threat.

Riga last failed to win on April 8 in a 1-1 draw against Metta. Their only defeat of the season came on March 29 in a 1-2 home loss to Daugavpils.

Up next is a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash, as Riga FC will host second-place and reigning champions RFS in four days’ time in the big Rīga derby.
