In today’s TOPsport A Lyga Matchday 6 match, FC Džiugas Telšiai achieved their first-ever victory against FK Paņevežys in the Lithuanian top flight, thanks to a first-half goal by Simonas Urbys.
Both teams entered the match following defeats; Paņevežys lost 1:3 to Riteriai in their last game away from home, while Džiugas fell to league leaders Hegelmann with a score of 0:2. Historically, Paņevežys had never lost to Telšiai in the A Lyga. In their previous 16 encounters, Paņevežys won nine times, with the other seven matches ending in draws.
Looking to maintain their dominance, Paņevežys manager Roland Vrabec made two changes to the starting lineup, welcoming back Laurit Krasniqi and Faustas Steponavičius. Similarly, Džiugas manager Andrius Lipskis also made two adjustments, starting Fray Kayramani and Simonas Urbys.
Džiugas scored the opening goal in the 34th minute. Oleksandr Kurtsev’s initial header struck the post, but the rebound fell to Simonas Urbys, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
Despite their efforts to equalize, Paņevežys, former A Lyga champions, struggled to find the back of the net. Their best chance in the second half came from Faustas Steponavičius, who had a wide-open goal but failed to generate enough power in his shot, allowing a Džiugas defender to clear the ball off the line.
With this victory, Džiugas ended their two-game losing streak and celebrated their first win against Paņevežys in the Lithuanian top flight. Meanwhile, Paņevežys has managed to win only one of their last seven league matches.
