In the Armenian top-flight, Matas Vareika continues to shine. He scored his fifth league goal since moving to Armenia and helped his Pyunik Yerevan secure a 3:1 victory against Gandzasar.
The 25-year-old Lithuanian started the match on the bench against the league’s bottom team, who, after 22 games, had yet to win, recording three draws and a goal difference of 9-60.
Gandzasar took an unexpected lead in the first half, but Pyunik quickly responded, scoring twice in a span of three minutes in the second half to take the lead. In the 70th minute, with the score at 2-1, Matas Vareika was substituted onto the field. In the closing minutes of the game, he scored his fourth league goal in a row, bringing the final score to 3-1.
After moving from Hegelmann during the winter transfer window, Matas has made nine appearances for Pyunik across all competitions, netting six goals.
Currently, Pyunik sits in fourth place on the league table with 47 points. Their next match is scheduled for Tuesday, where they will host Ararat-Armenia in the first leg of the Armenian Cup semifinal.
