In today’s Swiss Super League match, Andrejs Cigaņiks’ team, FC Luzern, suffered a 1:3 defeat against the bottom-table team, Grasshoppers. Meanwhile, in Romania, Aleksejs Saveļjevs made a rare start in an important win for his Gloria Bužau side.
For the third consecutive game, Andrejs Cigaņiks began on the bench for Luzern during their away match against Grasshoppers. The Latvian defender was substituted in as part of a triple change in the first half, following a poor performance by the team, which found themselves down by a goal.
In the 54th minute, Luzern equalized, suggesting they might get over the hump. However, just two minutes later, 20-year-old Gambian forward Adama Bojang, on loan at Grasshoppers from Ligue 1 side Reims, scored his second goal of the match to regain the lead.
Midway through the second half, Bojang completed his hat-trick, leading Grasshoppers to a crucial victory in their fight to avoid relegation. In contrast, Luzern, who just weeks ago were near the top of the standings, have now won only one of their last six league games and sit in fourth place with 48 points, seven points behind leaders Basel.
With two games remaining before the teams are split into Championship and Relegation groups, Luzern currently hold a spot in the top six, which will qualify them for the championship group. They have a four-point cushion over Lausanne, who are in seventh place. However, their remaining matches will be challenging, as they will host Young Boys on Sunday, followed by a match against the second-place team Servette the following week.
In Romania, Latvian national team midfielder Aleksejs Saveļjevs received a rare start for Gloria Bužau, who achieved a crucial 2:0 victory away against FC Hermannstadt. This marked Saveļjevs’ first league start since February 10, when he played in a 0:1 defeat to Farul Constanta. Today, he made his seventh appearance of the season for the Romanian side.
With 16 points, Gloria currently sits in 15th place in the 16-team league, just three points behind Farul Constanta, who are in the position that would avoid automatic relegation to the Romanian second tier. Gloria Bužau’s next match will be on Friday when they host Poli Iasi, who are four points ahead of them in the standings.
In Cambodia, Arturs Karašausks and Vitālijs Jagodinskis helped Visakha FC secure their sixth consecutive win by defeating Angkor Tiger 3:2. Latvian national team defender Vitālijs Jagodinskis played the full match, while Arturs Karašausks was substituted in at the end of the game.
With five games remaining in the Cambodian Premier League, Visakha have guaranteed a third-place finish but are still five points behind leaders Svay Rieng and just one point behind Phnom Penh Crown. Their next match will be against Phnom Penh Crown next Saturday.
