In the final match of Matchday 5 in the TonyBet Virslīga, FS Jelgava defeated SK Super Nova 2-1 at home to secure their first win of the season.
Before this match, FS Jelgava was the only team in the league without a win, following FK Tukums 2000’s earlier victory over FK Grobiņa on Saturday. Manager Aleksandrs Basovs aimed to change that. He made just one adjustment to the starting lineup compared to the game against FK Auda, bringing back Ondrej Ullman after his previous absence. On the other side, Ervīns Pērkons made three changes to the starting lineup, introducing Kristers Skadmanis, Mihails Tihonovičs, and Ralfs Šitjakovs.
In the first half, FS Jelgava was very dangerous, scoring the opening goal immediately following a corner kick. The 18-year-old Nigerian Victor Promise, who impressed in his debut against FK Auda the previous week, received the ball in the penalty area and passed it to Rihards Bečers, who redirected it into the goal, giving Jelgava the lead.
At the start of the second half, Jelgava struck again from a set piece. Another short corner, this time taken by Ullman from the right side, set up Kristers Penkevics, who scored with a header into the left corner, extending Jelgava’s lead to 2-0.
In the 68th minute, Super Nova’s Ruslans Deružinskis reduced the deficit to one goal after receiving a great pass, dribbling past the goalkeeper, and finishing into an almost empty net while celebrating with the Cole Palmer Cold dance.
However, that was all Super Nova could produce as they now remain winless in their last three league matches. Meanwhile, FS Jelgava becomes the last team in the Virslīga to secure a win this season.
FS Jelgava’s next match will be on Thursday, when they host the in-form BFC Daugavpils. SK Super Nova will also play that day, hosting FK Grobiņa.
