On Matchday 2 of the Virslīga, an exciting game took place at LNK Sport Park. FC RFS scored a last-minute goal by Darko Lemajic, spoiling what could have been a career performance for FS Jelgava’s goalkeeper, Adam Dvorak.

In their first league match, FC RFS secured a tough 2-1 victory against FK Auda, while FS Jelgava did not achieve a win in Liepāja, settling for a 1-1 draw against FK Grobiņa.

The defending champions RFS were favored to win, especially considering they had beaten Jelgava four times in the previous season, including home victories with scores of 5-1 and 7-0. However, the match did not go as expected, as Jelgava proved to be a formidable opponent, looking dangerous in the first half. RFS also had their own chances, but Dvorak kept the game scoreless as both teams headed to the half-time.

At the beginning of the second half, Jelgava had a great opportunity, but a shot from their attacking player went just over the crossbar. Shortly after, RFS responded with Petr Mareš hitting the crossbar with a long-range effort.

Jelgava attempted to answer back as Czech legionnaire Holoubek took a shot that was saved by Ondoa and grazed the goalpost. However, RFS soon took control of the match.

As in their game against FK Grobiņa, FS Jelgava played exceptionally well but began to tire, with limited options available on the bench. This fatigue showed in the last ten minutes as RFS ramped up their attack. Adam Dvorak, the Jelgava goalkeeper, made miraculous saves, denying two clear goal-scoring chances within seconds, and received help from his defenders, who blocked one certain goal.

In the third minute of stoppage time, RFS’s persistence paid off. Following a cross from Jānis Ikaunieks, Darko Lemajič scored his first goal of the season, igniting celebration among the fans in the stands. This was heartbreak for Jelgava and sheer joy for RFS.

With this victory, RFS has started the season with two wins out of two games, placing them at the top of the league. FS Jelgava has one point after two rounds.

In four days, RFS will face BFC Daugavpils in an away match, while FS Jelgava will host Riga FC on the same day in their next league match.
