RFS Women and Latvia National Team striker Santa Sanija Vuškāne has been announced as the latest signing by the Polish GKS Katowice on a two year deal.

The transfer has been announced by both clubs, revealing that Santa Sanija Vuškāne (19) will be joining GKS Katowice on a two year contract. Vuškāne, who scored 24 goals in 14 games for RFS Women last season, attracted international attention on the transfer market already last year, but the striker did not wish to depart her club mid-way through the season. In addition to being the top scorer for RFS Women, she also took the golden boot in the Latvian Women’s League – the country’s top tier of women’s football – and made her debut with the national team in June.

In a farewell interview with RFS Women, Vuškāne reflected on the transfer:

I was on trial in Switzerland but GKS were willing to offer me a contract outright. I am very grateful for the opportunity to join GKS Katowice. Of course, some adaptation time will be needed to learn the language and about what the team will want from me and I appreciate that this will be challenging, but I am willing to do everything to succeed here. I feel very welcome, my teammates are very nice and coaches are very helpful; it is genuinely lovely to be here.

Speaking with official media of GKS Katowice, Vuškāne added:

I want to develop in this team and I want to show my best here. I am here to grow not only as a player but also as a person. I am fast, good in the air and I love to score goals!

Vuškāne’s transfer comes shortly after two of her former teammates, Anastasija Poļuhoviča, who joined Czech AC Sparta Praha and Anastasija Vainere, who joined Greek REA, left RFS Women. Speaking with Baltic Football News about these transfers and the overall direction in which RFS Women are heading, club president, Jurijs Žigajevs, revealed:

We are very happy about Vuškāne as well as Poļuhoviča and Vainere, the latter of whom is now in Greece. It is possible that Ņesterova might be next. Of course, we want to compete for the title next season, as is expected of RFS, but the development of local players stands first and foremost for us, so we will never interfere with players should opportunities from stronger clubs or stronger leagues come their way. Developing local players in a professional manner so that they could either become national team players or be able take that next step in their career is of outmost importance to us. Accordingly, we are very pleased and, hopefully, more RFS Women players will move to stronger leagues already next summer or at the end of next season.

GKS Katowice are currently top of the league with no losses after 11 games.
