UEFA has taken an interest in an investigation into possible conflicts of interest and breaches of player-loan regulations in Latvia’s Virsliga, Latvian Football Federation president Vadims Ļašenko said.
The LFF’s Ethics Committee opened proceedings after RFS beat Super Nova 2-1 on 29th of May. Questions were raised about Super Nova’s starting line-up, the absence of loan players and several second-half substitutions made while the score was 1-1. The case was formally announced on 8th of June.
The investigation has since expanded beyond the two clubs involved in that match. The Ethics Committee said the number of facts and related circumstances under review had increased, with possible breaches involving a wider group of clubs and matches.
Ļašenko said UEFA officials responsible for investigating integrity breaches had recently visited Riga and were following developments. He also acknowledged concerns over informal agreements between clubs, including arrangements that could affect the selection of loan players against their parent clubs.
The LFF president said the federation was taking care to avoid a rushed decision that could later be challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He expects greater clarity after the Virsliga season ends.
“An investigation is under way, and not only the Latvian Football Federation but also UEFA has paid close attention to it,” Ļašenko said.
The LFF changed its regulations before the season to prevent loaned players from being automatically barred from facing their parent clubs. However, a study published during the summer suggested that similar concerns remained across Latvian football.
