Ogre United kept their hopes of avoiding automatic relegation alive with a crucial 1-0 home victory over Super Nova in the 31st round of the Latvian Virslīga. Kristers Čudars scored the only goal from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time.
Super Nova made the brighter start and created several opportunities during the opening half-hour. Ibrahima Ndiaye threatened twice with headers inside the opening two minutes, while Ivans Patrikejevs and Rikuto Iida both tested Parfjonovs as the visitors increasingly took control.
The pressure intensified midway through the half. Patrikejevs had another effort blocked before Super Nova created a scramble inside the Ogre penalty area in the 31st minute. Eduards Emsis and Amadou Samate both tried their luck, with Parfjonovs producing an excellent save to deny Samate’s powerful effort.
Ogre gradually grew into the contest and began creating chances of their own. Markuss Ivulāns was particularly active, seeing two efforts blocked in quick succession before another attempt went narrowly wide. The hosts were rewarded just before the interval when Dāvis Veisbuks brought down Jacques Fokam inside the penalty area.
Čudars stepped up and converted the resulting penalty in the first minute of stoppage time. Veisbuks guessed correctly and got a touch to the ball, but could not keep it out as Čudars scored his ninth league goal of the season to send Ogre into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Super Nova introduced Kristaps Romanovs and Valērijs Lizunovs at half-time and again enjoyed more possession, but clear opportunities remained difficult to create. Samate tested Parfjonovs from distance early in the second half, while at the other end Leif Estevez Fernandez twice threatened to extend Ogre’s advantage.
The visitors increased the pressure as the match entered its final quarter. Romanovs and Lizunovs both had efforts blocked before Romanovs met a Patrikejevs cross with a header that was comfortably dealt with by Parfjonovs. Mārcis Ošs also tested the Ogre goalkeeper with a header in the 78th minute.
Despite needing an equaliser, Super Nova struggled to turn their possession into sustained pressure. Ogre even had opportunities to make the result safe, with Veisbuks denying Vadym Mashchenko from distance and later producing another save from Estevez Fernandez.
Super Nova had one final opportunity in stoppage time when Patrikejevs delivered a cross for Ošs, but his header was blocked and Ogre held on for a vital 1-0 victory.
The three points do not lift Ogre United from the bottom of the Virslīga table, but they reduce the gap to ninth-placed Tukums 2000 to six points and keep their survival hopes alive with five rounds remaining. Super Nova stay sixth and remain 12 points clear of the relegation play-off position.
