Defending champions Kauno Žalgiris returned to the top of the Toplyga table in the opening match of Matchday 31, with substitute Leon Krekovic scoring a late winner in a 1-0 away victory over Panevėžys.

It was the fourth and final league meeting between the sides this season. Kauno Žalgiris had won both matches played in Kaunas convincingly, while their previous trip to Panevėžys ended in a draw. The champions arrived in confident mood after crushing then-leaders Sūduva 5-1 just four days earlier, cutting the gap at the top to three points. Another victory would take them level with the Marijampolė side and above them thanks to their superior head-to-head record.

The opening stages produced little in the way of clear chances. Kauno Žalgiris controlled more of the possession but struggled to turn it into anything beyond a series of crosses into the penalty area. It was Panevėžys who created the first dangerous moment when Kwadwo Asamoah broke into the box from the left and fired a powerful ball across the face of goal. Ernestas Veliulis was arriving in the middle but could not make contact.

Kauno Žalgiris responded with their best opportunity of the first half. Leo Ribeiro delivered from the left towards Anthony Kalik, who made a well-timed run into the penalty area and managed to direct an effort towards goal while falling, only for Vytautas Černiauskas to save with his leg. The Panevėžys goalkeeper was called into action again shortly afterwards when Vykintas Slivka tested him from the edge of the box.

The champions increased the pressure considerably after the break, producing wave after wave of attacks as Panevėžys were pushed deeper into their own half. The home defence stood firm for most of the second period, throwing bodies in front of several attempts and keeping the visitors frustrated.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 83rd minute. Motiejus Burba sent a cross into the penalty area from the right, and although Gabriel Debeljuh could not reach it in the middle, the ball continued towards the far post. Krekovic had been left completely unmarked and redirected it into the net with his first touch to put Kauno Žalgiris ahead. It was his second goal in the space of four days after also scoring in the 5-1 victory over Sūduva.

Panevėžys attempted to respond through a couple of dangerous set-piece situations in the closing stages, but Tomas Švedkauskas was never forced into a decisive save as Kauno Žalgiris protected their narrow advantage and secured another crucial three points.

The victory moves Kauno Žalgiris level on points with Sūduva and back to the top of the table because of their better head-to-head record. With six rounds remaining, the defending champions have now put themselves firmly back in control of the Toplyga title race.
