Defensive mistakes proved costly for Toplyga leaders Sūduva as they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against defending champions Kauno Žalgiris at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium. With seven rounds remaining, Sūduva still lead by three points, but Kauno Žalgiris have a game in hand.
One of the biggest matches of the Lithuanian league season took place in Kaunas as the top two met for the third time this year. Sūduva had taken four points from the first two meetings, but this time the contest quickly moved in the champions’ favour.
Sūduva looked vulnerable from the opening minutes. Motiejus Burba was gifted an early one-on-one opportunity after a weak defensive header back towards goal, but failed to take advantage. Kauno Žalgiris did not waste the next mistake.
In the fourth minute, a pass from the goalkeeper towards Amadou Sabo was intercepted inside the Sūduva penalty area, allowing Yukiyoshi Karashima to react quickly and finish into the corner for 1-0.
The hosts doubled their lead on the half-hour mark. Gabriel Debeljuh rose highest from a corner and headed home to make it 2-0. Moments later, the ball was in the net again, but an offside decision spared Sūduva from falling three goals behind before half-time.
Donatas Vencevičius’ side offered little threat in the opening 45 minutes and needed a response after the break. Their best chance arrived early in the second half when Faustas Steponavičius showed his pace to break through one-on-one after carrying the ball from inside his own half. With two defenders recovering behind him, however, his finish lacked power and was comfortably saved.
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared in a devastating two-minute spell. In the 69th minute, another serious mistake in Sūduva’s defensive third allowed Kauno Žalgiris to win possession and launch a quick attack. The ball was played across goal for Amine Benchaib, who arrived at the far post to make it 3-0.
Just a minute later, Kauno Žalgiris struck again from a corner, with Renan Oliveira heading in the fourth.
The champions eased off slightly after establishing their four-goal advantage, allowing Sūduva to create more opportunities late on. The visitors finally found a consolation in the 88th minute when Meinardas Mikulėnas won an aerial duel and knocked the ball down for Ukrainian midfielder Yehor Tsykalo, who scored on his first start and only his second appearance for the club.
Kauno Žalgiris restored the four-goal margin in stoppage time, with Leon Kreković scoring to complete a commanding 5-1 victory.
It was Kauno Žalgiris’ first competitive win over Sūduva this season and a major result in the title race. Sūduva remain three points clear with seven rounds left, but the defending champions still have a game in hand. The two sides are scheduled to meet for the final time in the league on October 19 in Marijampolė.
