The Latvian-Estonian connection delivered once again in the Dutch second division, but it was only a brief bright spot for Dordrecht as they suffered a heavy 1-6 away defeat against Volendam.
For the second time this season, Dario Šits provided an assist for Martin Vetkal, with the Baltic duo both starting for Dordrecht. However, the visitors endured a nightmare opening as experienced striker Henk Veerman scored twice inside the first 15 minutes to put Volendam firmly in control.
Dordrecht briefly found a way back into the match in the 27th minute. Just as he had done in the opening league game earlier this month, Latvian international Šits set up Estonian midfielder Vetkal, who finished to reduce the deficit.
It was Vetkal’s second goal of the season, continuing his strong personal start to the campaign. However, that moment proved to be Dordrecht’s only real highlight of the evening.
Volendam responded ruthlessly and scored four unanswered goals to turn the match into a one-sided defeat for the visitors. Vetkal played 60 minutes before being substituted and now has two goals in four league appearances this season.
Šits, who is on loan at Dordrecht from Parma, played 77 minutes. The 22-year-old Latvian has now contributed to goals in three of his first four league matches this season, registering one goal and two assists.
Dordrecht remain on four points after four matches and sit 13th in the table. Their next league match will be next Saturday, when they host Jong AZ.
